Samplers Series
cotton needlework fabric and cotton embroidery floss
2012

Samplers were traditonally used as an introduction to needlework skills and to provide young women with a guide for their future work. The underlying influence of samplers is their use as lessons to teach and reinforce feminine behaviours; gentleness, patience, obedience, and self-subjugation. Using the symbols and techniques of traditional women's needlework and the words of my Great Grandmother, Kathleen Towers, who was a craftsperson who made work of her own choosing, breaking countless rules along the way. By recreating the tradition of women's handwork, I have mimicked the act of a negative and surpressive practice with its message being passed on while also creating work that honours the lives and work of women that have come before me, looking to a number of positive and challenging role models.
